The Colony of Atascadero was founded in 1913 by E.G. Lewis. It was to be Lewis’ “utopia,” or paradise. He purchased the 26 square miles of land that had been set aside as a military camp and began construction.
The City was later incorporated in 1979. It is led by an elected five member council, with one council member (elected by the members themselves) serving as mayor on a rotational basis. The city’s day-to-day operations are managed by a City Manager. The City is an innovative and entrepreneurial organization. Seven departments make up the City’s Administration - City Manager, Administrative Services, Community Development, Community Services, Public Works, Fire and Police - each working together to provide legendary customer service to the public. Helping to shape the community, Atascadero also has a Planning Commission and a Parks and Recreation Commission. Both meet monthly and help to guide growth and development.
