CM REPORT TO THE CITY COUNCIL – September 14, 2021

September 11th, 2021 - Patriot’s Day Tribute -

Last Saturday, we commemorated the 20th anniversary of the events of September 11, 2001 with a very special patriotic evening event, which was combined with our regular Saturday Summer Concert; community members gathered together here at City Hall and Sunken Gardens to honor the lives of the all those lost 20 years ago, on 9/11.

Everyone had a chance to meet some of our own Local Heroes, with a good number of our Police and Fire officers on hand; which we really appreciate, especially since many of our emergency staff members are assisting on fires out of the area.

We also give a very sincere thank you to the pilots of the Estrella Warbirds Freedom Flight, who performed a vintage military 3-plane flyover with the poignant “Missing Man” maneuver over City Hall, in honor of the lives lost on 9-11;

US Army veteran Bob Kelly piloted the plane out in front of the 3-plane “V” formation; the left wing of the formation was piloted by US Marine Corps veteran Wayne Rice; and the right wing was piloted by former Atascadero Police Chief John Couch, a US Army Vietnam veteran that served as a Huey helicopter gunner and crew-chief; along with former Chief Couch, the right-wing plane was co-piloted by Atascadero resident and US Air Force Vietnam veteran George Marrett, who was also instrumental in helping to coordinate the flyover for us; we really appreciate the Warbird’s participation in the event.

Our local Atascadero High School band and honor choir and performers from the Fine Arts Academy helped to make the evening special, with beautiful and patriotic performances of the National Anthem and America the Beautiful. Following the ceremony, we were all entertained by a terrific double feature Saturday Concert, with Painted Red Music and Unfinished Business; who were both just great and made for a terrific conclusion of the evening;

This coming Saturday will be the final Summer Concert of the season, which will be held back over at Atascadero Lake Park at the bandstand.

Atascadero Kiwanis Performs Graffiti Removal!

I’d also like to give a big Shout Out and Thank You to our terrific Kiwanis Club of Atascadero, and specifically several individual Kiwanians: Bob Friedrichsen, Mike Marquez, Kathleen Graham, Bill Minarik, Tony Villa, Pat Lynch, Dennis Howland and Blaine Stauffer; who, with plenty of paint donated by Terra Paint and Sherwin Williams, met up early in the morning one day last month for a very productive couple of hours, to paint over a good bit of unsightly graffiti located under a couple of bridges in town;

After which they reportedly celebrated their efforts with coffee at Malibu Brew! These civic-minded citizens coordinated their efforts through the Atascadero Police Department;

We are very grateful for their efforts to help keep our community beautiful!

Shows For Shots!

We have been working together with the County Public Health Department to have a special COVID vaccine clinic in North County! This clinic will be one of three being held across the county, with a special promotion called “Shots For Shows” to help encourage folks to get vaccinated.

Bruce Howard, the owner of Otter Productions, is donating free concert tickets to a variety of shows being held at the Avila Beach Resort and Fremont Theater to anyone receiving their first dose. Both Pfizer and J&J vaccines will be offered from 2:30 pm until 6 pm at the Pavilion on the Lake, this Friday, September 17th.

For questions, please call 781-5500 or go online to recoverslo.org.

The Cornhole Tournament Is Coming this weekend!

This coming Friday and Saturday, September 17th and 18th! Starting with a small, 2-person team tournament being held on Friday at the Ravine Waterpark in Paso Robles; and continuing on Saturday with the main, 2-person team tournament, here at Sunken Gardens, with registration starting at 8:00 am.

This 5th Annual Cornhole Tournament is being put on by Knights of Columbus and the Kiwanis Club of Atascadero. Proceeds benefit the Boys & Girls Club and Boy Scout Troop 51.

Be sure to go to VisitAtascadero.com/cornholefor all the details and the registration form.

Atascadero Creek & Salinas River Cleanup Day!

The Creek Clean Up Day will also be held this Saturday, September 18th, from 9am to noon!

This annual event is sponsored by the City, Atascadero Waste Management and the Atascadero Mutual Water Company; volunteers will meet at the AMWC Yard, located on Sycamore Avenue, at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning; and creek cleaning activities will take place from 9am to noon.

Volunteers will assist with clearing certain sections of the Creek or the Salinas River and will be assigned to a section; they should be sure to bring their own work gloves, sturdy, closed-toe shoes or work boots, and a small backpack to carry a bottle of water, which will be supplied; this year unfortunately, there won’t be additional refreshments or lunch provided. It’s also very helpful if volunteers come with their own trucks available to haul the debris collected to the AMWC Yard.

For information, please contact our Public Works Department at 805-470-3456.

The Chamber’s First Art, Wine & Brew Tour of 2021!

Will be held on Friday, September 24th from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance from atascaderochamber.org, and $25 at the door that evening. The price of a ticket includes a wine glass, plus wine, beer, coffee and cider tastings from about 15 to 20 downtown businesses.

After 5pm that Friday, stop in at the booth that will be located out in front of City Hall to claim your wine glass and your wristband for the tastings; then sip and shop your way through the downtown, and enjoy phenomenal wine, beer, and other treats!

There will be free tours of Historic City Hall that evening as well.
