The City of Atascadero is proud to announce a significant improvement in its Insurance Services Office (ISO) Public Protection Classification (PPC) rating. Effective May 1, 2026, Atascadero’s PPC will improve from Class 03/3X to Class 02/2X, reflecting the community’s ongoing commitment to fire protection and risk reduction.
The PPC program, administered by ISO, evaluates communities nationwide on their structural fire suppression capabilities. Ratings range from Class 1 (exemplary fire protection) to Class 10 (does not meet minimum criteria). This classification is a critical factor for property owners, as it influences insurance premiums and demonstrates the effectiveness of local fire protection services.
The improved rating recognizes enhancements in several key areas, including:
- Emergency Communications – Upgraded systems for emergency reporting, telecommunicator staffing, and dispatch circuits.
- Fire Department Capabilities – Increased engine company capacity, improved training programs, and strengthened deployment analysis.
- Water Supply – Continued investment in hydrant infrastructure and flow testing to ensure adequate fire suppression resources.
- Community Risk Reduction – Expanded fire prevention, public education, and investigation programs.
Fire Chief Casey Bryson stated:
"This achievement reflects years of hard work and collaboration between our fire department, city leadership, and community partners. Moving from a Class 3 to a Class 2 rating not only demonstrates our commitment to public safety but also provides potential insurance savings for residents and businesses."
City Manager Jim Lewis added:
"This improvement is a testament to Atascadero’s dedication to infrastructure, training, and community risk reduction. It’s a win for public safety and a win for our residents, who may see lower insurance costs as a result."
Property owners are encouraged to contact their insurance providers to learn how this improved classification may affect their premiums.
