As Independence Day approaches, the City of Atascadero and the Atascadero Police Department are reminding residents that the use of any fireworks within the City of Atascadero is prohibited, including "Safe & Sane" fireworks.
While California law allows the sale and use of Safe & Sane fireworks in certain communities, they may not be discharged anywhere within the City of Atascadero. Residents may legally possess Safe & Sane fireworks that were purchased in jurisdictions where they are authorized for sale; however, lighting, igniting, discharging, or using any fireworks within city limits is prohibited.
Atascadero remains highly vulnerable to wildfire due to dry vegetation, warm temperatures, and seasonal weather conditions. Even a single spark from a firework can quickly ignite a vegetation fire, placing homes, businesses, residents, pets, and first responders at risk.
To help protect the community, the City has adopted an Illegal Fireworks Social Host Accountability Ordinance, which holds individuals accountable for hosting, allowing, possessing, using, or discharging illegal fireworks. The ordinance also provides for penalties and cost recovery associated with fireworks-related violations and emergency responses.
Residents are encouraged to celebrate responsibly by attending professionally conducted fireworks displays in neighboring communities and enjoying other family-friendly holiday activities.
The City asks everyone to do their part in preventing fires and keeping Atascadero safe this Fourth of July. For more information regarding the City's fireworks ordinance and frequently asked questions, please contact the Atascadero Police Department at (805) 461-5051.
