The League of California Cities, County Engineers Association of California, and the California State Association of Counties have recognized the City of Atascadero’s El Camino Real Downtown Parking and Safety Enhancements Project (The ECR Project) with the award for Efficient and Sustainable Road Maintenance, Construction, and Reconstruction Projects during the Cal Cities Public Works Officers Institute.

The ECR Project revitalized a 0.6‑mile segment of El Camino Real in the Downtown core, incorporating safety enhancements, expanded parking, and streetscape improvements that support economic activity and create a distinct “authentic Atascadero” character. Key project features include upgraded crosswalks, a new signalized crossing at East Mall, approximately 100 additional free parking spaces—including ADA-accessible spaces—ADA improvements, new sidewalks and driveways, decorative pendant lighting, upgraded street lighting, landscaping, and over 25 new street trees.

“This award from the League of California Cities is significant statewide recognition for this transformative Downtown project,” said Ryan Hayes, Deputy Director of Public Works and ECR Project Manager.

Initiated in 2017, the ECR Project was developed through extensive community engagement with residents, businesses, and stakeholders. Funding was provided in part by the offices of Senator Laird, Congressman Panetta, and the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments. The project was completed on time and within budget.
