Atascadero Fire & Emergency Services is thrilled to announce that the Long Valley neighborhood has officially earned recognition as a NFPA Firewise USA® Community, marking a significant milestone in local wildfire preparedness. This achievement makes Long Valley the second community in Atascadero within the past eight months to join the national Firewise program—underscoring the city’s growing commitment to wildfire safety and resilience.
Spanning 1,262 acres, with 221 homes and more than 500 residents, Long Valley demonstrated exceptional dedication to reducing wildfire risk. Over several months, residents partnered closely with Atascadero Fire & Emergency Services to take proactive steps toward becoming Firewise. Their efforts included:
- Forming a local Firewise board to lead community initiatives
- Completing a detailed wildfire risk assessment for the neighborhood
- Developing a three-year action plan focused on reducing hazards and improving defensible space
On January 28, 2026, Long Valley submitted its application to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and, within weeks, received its official Certificate of Recognition, a testament to the community’s hard work and collaboration.
“This accomplishment reflects the power of neighbors working together to protect lives, property, and the environment,” said Dave Van Son, Battalion Chief. “Long Valley’s commitment sets an inspiring example for other neighborhoods in our city.”
Participating in the Firewise USA® program provides a wide range of benefits, including:
- Increased safety and preparedness through community-wide risk assessments and strategic mitigation planning
- Greater access to resources and support from local and state fire agencies and organizations
- Enhanced eligibility for grants and funding opportunities to support fuel reduction and defensible space projects
- Stronger community engagement and awareness, helping neighbors work together to protect their homes and landscapes
- Potential insurance advantages, as some insurers recognize Firewise status in their risk evaluations
