San Carlos Vegetation & Barn Fire

On Saturday, August 2 at approximately 4:55 p.m., Atascadero Fire and Emergency Services responded to a barn fire at 8620 San Carlos that had extended into surrounding vegetation.

Upon arrival, fire crews found a barn that was on fire that was into the surrounding vegetation. A coordinated response from local and regional agencies helped quickly stop the fire’s forward progress by 5:40 p.m. In total, 9 acres of vegetation were burned, and one barn was lost. Thanks to outstanding weed abatement efforts by nearby residents, four surrounding structures were protected and saved.

Agencies responding included the San Luis Obispo County Fire Department, CAL FIRE San Luis Obispo, Templeton Fire Department, Paso Robles Fire Department, and Santa Margarita Fire Department. There were nine engines, two hand crews, four Chief officers, two dozers, aircraft, three police units and Atascadero PD Commander with a total of 77 fire personnel.

Two of the property owners had self-transported to Twin Cities Community Hospital. Tragically, four horses perished. No additional injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains undetermined at this time.
