UPDATE - July 23, 2026
Update: The motorist that fled from the injury traffic collision, fled in his vehicle and was involved in a second collision that involved no other motorists near the Curbaril/San Luis Avenue intersection. He then fled on foot into a nearby business and was detained by responding officers. Arrested, was Rafael Angeles Morales, 22 years of Atascadero.
He was arrested for 20001(a) VC; felony hit and run, (causing injury), 23153(a)(b) VC; DUI Causing Injury and Driving with a BAC of .08% or Greater, and 20002(a) VC; Hit and Run, (misdemeanor).
Angeles Morales was transported to the San Luis Obispo County Jail.
Original Release - July 22, 2026
On July 22, 2026, at approximately 5:00 pm, the Atascadero Police Department responded to a report of a traffic collision in the 7100 block of El Camino Real. On arrival, officers determined a vehicle versus scooter collision occurred, one party had moderate injuries, with one of the motorists having fled the area on foot.
Officers located and detained the suspected motorist near the intersection of Curbaril and San Luis Avenue. The injured motorist was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation is continuing and the scene is being processed. Motorists are requested to avoid the area.
The collision remains under investigation and anyone who witnessed or has information regarding the collision is asked to call the Atascadero Police Department at (805) 461-5051.
