The City of Atascadero incentivizes the production of affordable housing by encouraging housing affordable to a wide variety of income categories and family types. The incentive programs are identified in the City’s Housing Element. The City also offers increased development flexibility and additional units through the State of California’s Density Bonus Program. Although the City does not manage or develop housing units, the City does manage programs such as:

Affordable Housing Impact Fee Deferral Program
Stock Accessory Dwelling Unit Plans
Inclusionary Housing Policy and Program
Fractional Density Standards

Inclusionary Housing Policy and Program

The City has an inclusionary housing policy which creates affordable housing opportunities available within the City. This policy requires development projects with discretionary approval, such as planned developments and subdivisions, to provide deed restricted affordable residential units to people and families of very low, low, and moderate incomes or to provide the City with funds to help provide affordable units in other locations in the City.

For more information regarding the sale of affordable housing units in Atascadero, please contact the City of Atascadero’s Administrative Services Department at (805) 470-3428 or to discuss your options.

What affordable standards does the City of Atascadero use?

To find out if you qualify for affordable rental or ownership housing, visit San Luis Obispo County’s Affordable Housing website. Any affordable housing developments that were approved prior to July 2009 will use the Affordable Housing Standards (Pre-2009 Formula).

The San Luis Obispo County's Affordable Housing website can be found here.

How do I get certified?

Potential buyers must be screened for eligibility and certified as income qualified to purchase an affordable unit. The City of Atascadero has identified the San Luis Obispo Housing Authority (HASLO) and People's Self-Help Housing Corporation as entities to provide eligibility and income qualifying services. There is a cost for these services.
